Link of the day: “Cop28 landmark deal agreed to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels” (The Guardian)
Gary Payton writes:
With intense negotiations concluded, COP28 President Sultan al Jaber gaveled the "UAE Consensus" approved on Wednesday morning in Dubai. Applause of support. Statements of disappointment. No one nation, no one bloc gained all the language it wanted... the very nature of compromise across nearly 200 nations. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated “Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase-out is inevitable.” US Climate Envoy John Kerry summed it up: “We're not turning back.” Detailed assessment will be written in the days ahead. Critiques will accent positives and negatives. For now, however, COP28 will stand as another milestone on our shared path of climate action.
